There is one place in South Carolina where you can sit down at a live blackjack table, and it is the one place with the higher age limit. Everything else a player in this state can reach sets its floor at 18. That inversion catches people out, because in most states the pattern runs the other way: the casino floor is the adult venue and the lottery counter is the lenient one.

Why the ships are 21 and nothing else is

South Carolina has no statutory casino age, for the straightforward reason that it has no casinos to set an age for. The state prohibits gambling devices, so no land venue exists and no licensing regime attaches an age to one. The Big M's 21 is therefore not a state rule at all. It is the operator's own condition of boarding, checked at the dock with a valid government-issued photo ID, and the ships sail past the three-mile line before any machine switches on because that is where state jurisdiction ends.

Practically, the age is the least of the friction. Boarding is $20 per person including fee and taxes, rising to $30 for the Saturday evening cruise, Ship I covers Tuesdays and Ship II runs Wednesday through Sunday, and nothing sails on a Monday. Our Big M review has the full schedule. Turning up at 20 with a friend who is 21 gets you both turned away.

Why 18 is the floor everywhere else

The Education Lottery, set up by constitutional amendment in 2000, uses 18 and is retail only, so there is no online age check to pass. Promotional sweepstakes platforms mostly land on 18 as well, but the reason is different and worth understanding: there is no South Carolina statute setting an age for them. Each operator self-imposes a minimum in its own terms, which means the number can differ between two sites you sign up to on the same afternoon, and it can change without anyone announcing it.

That is not a loophole to lean on. An account opened under the stated minimum is an account that will be closed at the first identity check, and those checks do happen. Our reviewer team was asked for identity documents on 37 of 147 documented South Carolina tests logged between 12 May 2026 and 25 September 2026, and the request most often arrives at the point a redemption is attempted rather than at sign-up. The date of birth you enter in the first minute is the one that gets matched against a document months later.

What to check before you sign anything

Read the operator's own terms rather than a comparison page, ours included, because the age line is exactly the kind of clause that moves quietly. We rate the sign-up date-of-birth field more consequential than anything else on the registration form for that reason: it is the only entry on it that cannot be corrected later without a support ticket.

If you are 18, 19 or 20 and looking specifically for a floor to walk onto, there is not one in South Carolina at any age under 21, and the nearest options are across the North Carolina line. The new player checklist covers what to get right on a first online sign-up instead.

Frequently asked questions

How old do you have to be to gamble in South Carolina?

18 for the Education Lottery. 21 to board the Big M ships. There is no statewide statutory casino age because the state has no casinos.

Are there 18 and over casinos in South Carolina?

No. The only gaming floor in the state is on the Big M ships, and both require 21 with government-issued photo ID.

What is the minimum age for sweepstakes platforms in South Carolina?

Usually 18, set by each operator in its own terms rather than by state law. Some sit higher, so check the site you are joining.

Will an operator actually check my age?

Yes, at verification. Our South Carolina testers were asked for identity documents on 37 of 147 tests, most often at a redemption attempt.

Does the Education Lottery sell online to 18 year olds?

It sells to 18 year olds, but only at retail. There are no online lottery sales in South Carolina.

What happens if the date of birth on my account is wrong?

It will surface at verification and can hold a redemption. Correcting it usually needs a support ticket rather than a profile edit.
